Lance Johnson. Mixed Media Artist
When I was 14 years old, my mother showed me a documentary called “I’ll Make Me A World.” It was a brilliant examination of African American arts in America and the incredible collection of artists who I knew nothing about. It was there that I discovered the work of Romare Bearden. I was fascinated by the improvisation of his work and I knew I wanted to create art with that sort of freedom. As a Hip Hop junkie, the grittiness and energy of his work made so much sense to me..As Jazz informs Bearden’s work, Hip Hop informs mine…a natural continuation of the rich legacy. A rich legacy of Dopeness….
